Nanulose®

WHAT IS IT?

WHAT IS IT?

Nanulose bacterial nanocellulose

It is a product based on bacterial cellulose, a biomaterial produced by different types of bacteria. This polymer has the same chemical structure as cellulose of plant origin, but differs in its make-up and physical and chemical properties.

It is made up of nanometric-sized fibrils with a high degree of crystalline ordering.

The material has a purity level of 100%, with no contamination of residues such as lignin or hemicellulose, which are present in cellulose of vegetable origin.

NANULOSE® is a trademark owned by BIOM, which has been registered with the INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OFFICE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION (EUIPO Certificate).

BENEFITS

BENEFITS

Compatible with Vegan Ways of Life

No ingredients of plant or animal origin are used at any time in the production process.

Sustainable

Sustainable and environmentally-friendly production process. It helps in the fight against deforestation by representing an alternative to plant cellulose.

No waste generated

Part of the carbon that is used comes directly from CO2 in the atmosphere. The total carbon footprint is negative and contributes to reducing the greenhouse effect.

Uses and applications

Cosmetics

The size of the fibres that form the cellulose mesh is nanometric, well below the micrometric size of microcrystalline cellulose (which is derived from plant cellulose).

The fact that the fibres are so short allows for a higher density of fibres per unit volume, which in turn greatly increases the amount of liquid absorbed. This property is very attractive because the release time of the absorbed substances is lengthened, making it an effective carrier for active ingredients and liquids.

Another very interesting property of our cellulose is the possibility of making large sheets of it (which cannot be achieved with plant cellulose).

All these properties have uses in the cosmetic industry. It can be used for example as a stabilizer for emulsions and for the manufacture of facial masks and hair masks.

Medicine

It can be useful for the manufacture of dressings for skin wounds, burns, tissue regeneration, etc. since it is an effective carrier of active principles and liquids.

Textiles

Its high degree of crystalline arrangement gives it tensile strength properties that much higher than those that can be obtained with plant cellulose. It can be incorporated into fabrics and plastics to make them more resistant.

Other sectors

It filters out UV rays (both A and B), making it useful for applications such as food packaging to protect food from the harmful effects of exposure to light.

  • Combined with other nanoparticles, or proteins with antibacterial properties, it could be used to manufacture air conditioning and water filters to ensure that they are bacteria-free.
  • One of the bacterial strains we investigated, presents a greater growth and production of bacterial cellulose, when we add a processing based on residues from the agri-food industry. Using this residue would make it possible to lower production costs and bring them closer to those of plant cellulose production.

It has many more possible everyday applications, such as the production of quality paper, made with 100% pure cellulose, thus eliminating the need to cut down trees and contribute to the fight against deforestation.
